We’re pleased to introduce two of our new friends. Casey and Kelly are a mother and daughter who not only share a love for art and a superb talent for creating art but the courage to live rich lives despite grief.

Casey suffered a massive brain-stem stroke which rendered her right and dominant hand useless. Kelly lives with acute leukemia. Despite their challenges they approach life with grace and beauty; literally. Sumi-e, ink painting, exemplifies the concept of "Less is More."

Throughout her stroke recovery Casey learned to do more with less. She worked hard,
eventually learning to talk again and walk with the assistance of her service dog. Her lovely spirit and fierce determination shine through in her art.

In her own words, Kelly "is a painter!" She is not defined by the deadly disease that might escort us to our own pity party. Her water color paintings practically breathe – Giraffe with a slight sense of humor, Cougar with an intense gaze and Leafy Sea Dragon in delightful play.

Decorating Your Vacation Home on a Budget

In 2004 my husband and I fulfilled a dream we’d shared for years; we bought a lake home. It’s not big or fancy but it’s ours. Ironically all the time we dreamed, planned and saved we didn’t think about how we’d furnish or decorate a second house.

As luck would have it, in 2004 I owned an interior redesign business - decorating with what you already have and making the most of furniture placement and organizing. I was my own best client. So when Melody suggested I write a post about decorating a summer home, I took the easy route and wrote from experience.

Tips for spending less & enjoying more:

•Recycle

When new towels, rugs, lamps, bedding or furniture is purchased for our primary home the lake house usually gets the hand-me-downs. Although my decorating style has changed with the times I find that things I purchased years ago blend well with newer items. As I would tell my redesign clients – Things you own tend to work well together because they are things you love and enjoy. Don’t worry so much about trying to match the sofa with the easy chair. In a vacation home it’s more important that the sofa is a fold-out that sleeps two.

Maybe toss a hand beaded pillow on that miss-matched sofa.

•Retain and Repair

Once-in-a-while family members ask me if I need anything “for the cabin.” This could mean items from dishes to lamps, bedding to board games, books and lawn chairs to DVD’s. A few years ago my sister accidentally dropped a huge wall mirror breaking the wooden frame and chipping the glass in one corner. She was going to throw it away but then asked if I could use it “at the cabin.” Sure could. My father-in-law repaired the brown frame, which I painted a sea-blue; I then glued green and blue glass beads over the damaged part of the mirror. Now it has new life reflecting the lake from the living room wall. With each “donation” the lake house
becomes a little homier and visitors oftentimes find an old familiar treasure in one room or another.

Try propping a charming beaded pillow against your renewed treasure.

•Revise

During one of my organizing marathons I found artwork created by my kids when they were in grade school. I matted and framed a few for inexpensive wall art. My son’s 2nd grade version of Van Gogh’s Sunflowers, once displayed in our local post office, now hangs in my bedroom. My daughter’s 6th grade painting of a ship, which won a 4-H blue ribbon at the Oregon State Fair, graces a wall in the living room. Before you spend on wall décor, think about framing school projects, or enlarge and frame favorite photos.

Then add a hand beaded pillow for the perfect accent.

•Reduce and Relax

Don’t stress too much about having everything in your second house perfectly coordinated. Less is more when it comes to a vacation home: less stuff, more time for what’s really important– relaxing and enjoying time with family and friends. Kick back, put your feet up and admire the view.

And a lovely beaded pillow on the sofa doesn’t hurt either.

Tooth Fairy Lost Treasure Beaded Art Pillow

"The Tooth Fairy is real!"

I heard my kids say that many times while they were growing up as they wonderingly brought a token treasure to the breakfast table the morning after putting a tooth under their pillow.

Beginning with a floral pattern fabric, a tiny pocket of the same (for toothy treasures) is hand-sewn on the back.

The fairy is surrounded by white seed beads. Her brown seed bead hair is caught up in a purple ribbon so as not to hamper her pink seed bead wings.

Purple seed beads enhance her gown and she holds a small Pearly White in her palm. Blue facet-cut glass beads trim the top and bottom of this pillow.

100% premium polyester fiberfill.

This sweet little pillow, featuring a whimsical fairy by Melody Lea Lamb, will also include a tiny pocket on the back in which to tuck one of childhood's greatest treasures: a lost tooth. Karen plans to use rose seed beads and pale blue facet-cut glass beads as part of the beaded art. The Tooth Fairy Beaded Art Pillow is sure to be a family heirloom.

Summer Fairy in Purple- Beaded Art

Maybe you didn't know this, but fairies hibernate during the cold months of Winter.

Now that warmer weather is upon us, Summer Fairies are flitting everywhere ~ but rarely do we see them...until now.

This hanger is 5" in diameter and has a white cord. Karen double beaded the perimeter with purple, yellow and blue seed beads.

Karen used crystal seed beads on her wings and purple and pewter on her headband and dress.

Beaded Art Mouse and Monarch Butterfly Pillow

Once again the exquisite partnering of art and beading come together in this delightful little pillow featuring a timid field mouse and a delicate monarch butterfly.

Karen detailed the mouse with black, gray and brown seed beads. The mouse's eye features a small facet-cut blue glass bead. And her gray beaded whiskers twitch in the green seed bead blades of grass. One blade even has a crystal dew drop. Karen used a mixture of orange and yellow seed beads outlined with black on the butterfly. Its body is a mix of colorful iridescent cut tube beads.

The saying "there ain't no such thing as a free lunch", often abbreviated to TANSTAAFL refers to this custom, meaning that things which appear to be free are always paid for in some way. ~Wikipedia

Those are the rules. Every rule has an exception. However, if you’re like me you have a fear of the "Something for Nothing" gimmick. There must be a catch. A loop hole. I’m going to have to pay eventually. Because no one ever just gives something away for nothing.

By the way, giving something away for nothing does not mean it doesn’t have value.

So why do we give our art away? We believe in what we’re doing. Melody Lea Lamb and Karen Lideen (aka The Beaded Pillow) believe their art and skills and talents are true. We want you to know and see and feel what exactly it is we are creating. We know you will agree that the beaded art we are creating together has value and is unique and is meant to be treasured.

Go ahead. Stick your toe in the water. Test it out. And wouldn’t it be cool if you discovered the water was just fine? And wouldn’t it be cool if you got something for nothing?

What's cuter than a baby chick? Two. A pair of yellow chicks graces a background of pretty lavender. Each chick has been outlined with yellow luster seed beads. Their beaks are orange seed beads, their feet are brown seed beads.

Believe in the Easter Bunny because he's just arrived at The Beaded Pillow. Dozens of brown and cream seed beads were used to enhance this special bunny's basket., which is hidden in a meadow of long grass. Each blade of grass was beaded with crystal and pale green seed beads. In one upper corner of this delightful pillow you'll see a seed bead pearl flower, in the other a small brass butterfly charm.

Well, May is adorable, but she's also very chatty and is now just waiting for the next bit of juicy gossip from the neighborhood to pass along. Her whiskers are tuned-in and soon May will have quite a bit to say.

Meet May: Current Beaded Art Project

I knew the minute I saw her ACEO in Melody's Etsy shop http://etsy.me/g2Zabm that I wanted May the Mouse to become Beaded Art.

She arrived from Spoonflower yesterday and is already well on her way to becoming a sweet little pillow, complete with a chocolate brown satin back and one crystal dew drop!

May should be completed and ready for a new home by March 14, 2011.

Tis always the season to believe so don't let the calendar keep you from snapping up this little bunny. Hanging from a 6 1/2" black cord, our beaded art pillow features a quiet little rabbit with sprigs of holly leaves and berries. Each berry has been beaded with red and crystal seed beads. Pine-green seed beads were used on the leaves and trim the bottom of the pillow with crystal seed beads. The bunny's eye is detailed with a small brown faux pearl, crystal and brown seed beads. A silver metal charm with "Believe" is attached next to the cord.

Going Green Cute Beaded Bunny Pillow

He prefers not to be labeled a Bunny; he is a conscientious Rabbit well aware of his environment. He's very into recycling and he doesn't use plastic, waste electricity or own a car. Going Green Rabbit is all about green seed beads, too. They're everywhere on this one-of-a-kind beaded art pillow, depicting the lush foliage of the neighborhood. His nose is made-up of recycled metal brown seed beads, seed pearls trim his pelt and brown seed beads trim the glass black bead on his eye.

The Birth of Our Beaded Art

Melody has always wanted to design for fabric. Nearly twenty years ago she bought a bolt of fabric and began a season of sewing for her children that lasted for over a decade.

Above is Melody's daughter (16 years ago) surrounded by handmade bedding, in her homemade clothing, admiring her handmade, and of course, coordinated cloth doll.

For the last seven years Melody has focused on painting miniature art and illustrating books but continued to entertain the notion of designing for fabric.

Then she discovered Spoonflower.

"Spoonflower makes it possible for individuals to design, print and sell their own fabric designs. It was founded in May 2008 by two Internet geeks who had crafty wives but who knew nothing about textiles. The company came about because Stephen’s wife, Kim, persuaded him that being able to print her own fabric for curtains was a really cool idea. She wasn’t alone. The Spoonflower community now numbers around 70,000 individuals who use their own fabric to make curtains, quilts, clothes, bags, furniture, dolls, pillows, framed artwork, costumes, banners and much, much more."

Before your lovely beaded art arrives to brighten your home...

• Melody crops, adjusts and redefines her miniature painting on the computer and adds a coordinating unique and original design border
• The redefined art piece is sent via the Internet to Spoonflower
• The art is printed on a square of linen-cotton canvas fabric
• The fabric is shipped to Karen

Once Karen receives the fabric she decides what to make (pillow, ornament, hanger, mug mat) and what areas of the art to bead that will best highlight Melody’s talent and her own intricate beadwork. Since Karen works primarily with seed beads and sews each bead into place by hand one project can take several days to complete.

After the new beaded art is finished, photos are taken, descriptions are written and the item is posted.

Little Brown Bunny is not hiding in this patch of pretty crocus; she's just shy. Her soft body has been beaded with a combination of brown, gray and black seed beads. This pillow began its journey as an original painting in the art studio of Melody Lea Lamb. Melody’s "Miniature Masterpieces - Tiny Treasures" of fantasy beings and woodland creatures, are collected worldwide. From Melody’s studio it traveled to a fabricator specializing in art-to-fabric; once there it was transferred to a linen-cotton canvas cloth. After arriving at The Beaded Pillow it was hand-sewn and hand-beaded to create the one-of-a-kind treasure you see here.

There are two sure signs of Spring: tulips and bunny rabbits. Here we have a wise rabbit hiding in a patch of vibrant red tulips. His whiskers seem to quiver as his keen eye catches sight of something curious; perhaps the Easter Bunny?

Dozens of transparent red seed beads and silver-lined red seed beads were used to depict the flowers on this quaint pillow. Black and green seed beads enhance the blades of grass.

Purple iridescent seed beads frame the scene as lavender round and oval plastic beads complete a border. One facet-cut glass amber colored bead was used for the bunny’s eye. An unbeaded, yet complimentary fabric of green, red and purple flora is on the back.

Spring seems a little nearer today. For the second day in a row the sun is shining, icicles are melting and new fabrics bearing Melody's exquisite art have arrived. It was exciting to unwrap three sweet bunnies in various spring settings: red tulips, lavender tulips and lush green foliage.

The detail with which Melody paints each little rabbit is amazing; tiny whiskers seem to quiver and there is a depth in their eyes that makes me feel I am not quite alone in the craft room. It's a glad feeling.

I decided to create a pillow with the bunny and red tulips first and began the project immediately. Beading is coming along nicely; I was especially happy to find a stash of lavender beads that remind me of jelly beans!

Soon there will be another Melody Lea Lamb/Beaded Pillow treasure available for you to purchase, and more will follow in plenty of time for spring.

Now, everyone knows a proper bunny loves berries and this little rabbit is no exception; that’s why she chose to hide on this pillow. Red seed beads have been used to create a berry patch! Sun-yellow and mango seed beads define the leaves that have fallen and also frame the scene while one black facet-cut stone depicts Bunny’s eye. And look – there – see the butterfly? A little bronze butterfly charm flutters down in the corner, keeping our bunny company.

Our little bunny is nestled in a purple basket with lots of grandma’s lace to help him feel safe and cozy. Purple seed beads enhance the basket while dozens of pearl seed beads define the lace and trim the entire hanger giving it a lacey look as well . And see the tip of his nose? Three delicate pink seed beads add a little touch of whimsy. A white cord hanger is anchored with a faux silver charm that simply says “Hope.” (This gives our bunny a very secure feeling.)
